Mathis Gaubert

Intern 2023

Overview

Hello, my name is Mathis Gaubert and I come from France. I’m currently student at the school of Agrocampus-ouest in Rennes, where I’m studying agricultural sciences and will focus on plant sciences for my Masters. I chose to do an internship abroad to improve my English and gain some practical experience in the field. As I am interested by sheep, grazing and adaptability of agricultural systems to global challenges, what better choice than New Zealand?

I spent five months from September 2023 to February 2024 working with Malcolm’s team of technicians on the RADE experiment at Lincoln University. It was a very good experience to learn from the field, to see the lambs grow and to contribute to an experiment type never done before in New Zealand, and probably in the world. I also really appreciated being able to work with Malcolm’s team who were kind, caring and funny. Thank you for all your advice and the knowledge you have given to me!

It’s for sure hard to miss sheep when you come in New Zealand but it’s harder to miss South Island scenery! I also had the opportunity to take days off to visit deeper this beautiful country and discover so many places all around the South Island. Huts, free camping, river crossing, and sandflies have no more secrets for me. For that I would especially like to thank Joe for all his advice about my itineraries and to Lulu Jordan who introduced me to packrafting, hunting, and also mountaineering giving me unforgettable experiences in New Zealand.

I wish everyone a great time at the FRC, good luck for your studies and trials, I hope we will meet again!
